Description
A complete top mount turbo kit for the Mazda MX-5 NA and NB (1989–2005), designed around a V-band exhaust housing with external wastegate provision. Reverse rotation turbos route the compressor outlet toward the front of the engine bay, simplifying intercooler piping and reducing pressure drop.
What is included in the kit builder
Start with the manifold and downpipe, then add components to suit your build. The configurator shows only parts that are compatible with your previous selections.
- Manifold — Cast top mount with V-band turbine outlet and 38mm or 44mm external wastegate flange. Fits both 1.6 and 1.8 engines, clears the bonnet and AC compressor.
- Downpipe — 3″ V-band connection to the turbine housing. 304L stainless steel, TIG welded, pie-cut bends, back purged.
- Exhaust — Full 3″ turbo-back exhaust in 304L stainless with straight-through muffler and resonator by Simons (Sweden). V-band connections throughout.
- Turbo — Select from compatible reverse rotation turbochargers matched to the V-band manifold flange.
- Intercooler — Front mount intercooler with turbo-specific piping. TIG-welded aluminium with bead-rolled lips, 4-ply silicone couplers. 300–500hp core sizes available.
- Intake — Filter and piping sized for the compressor inlet.
- Lines and fittings — Oil feed, oil drain, and coolant lines for your selected turbo.
Why reverse rotation for the MX-5
Standard rotation turbos on a top mount manifold point the compressor outlet toward the firewall, requiring long, complex piping runs to reach a front mount intercooler. Reverse rotation flips the compressor wheel direction so the outlet faces forward. The result is shorter piping, fewer bends, and lower pressure losses — particularly relevant on the compact MX-5 engine bay.
External wastegate advantages
An external wastegate separates boost control from the turbine housing. This eliminates the exhaust gas recirculation common in internal wastegate setups, improving turbine efficiency at higher boost levels. The separate dump pipe also provides more tuning flexibility for exhaust pulse management.

I purchased only the manifold and haven’t installed it yet, but I’m very happy with the purchase so far. I hope you consider offering an intercooler kit for this setup soon—I’d be interested in buying it from you. I also think it would be a great idea to allow customers to purchase components of the kit individually. For example, I’m looking to buy a downpipe from you next, but currently, it seems I can’t do that without adding the manifold to the order, which I already own.
