Description

A replacement hardtop for the Mazda MX-5 NA and NB (1989–2005), manufactured entirely from carbon fibre. Designed as a direct replacement for the OEM steel hardtop with the same mounting points and seal profile.

How the carbon fibre hardtop is constructed

The shell uses a six-layer double-skin layup — three layers of carbon fibre on the outer skin and three on the inner, with a structural core between them. This double-skin construction distributes load across both surfaces, producing a hardtop that is stiffer than single-skin alternatives without adding weight. No fibreglass substrate is used at any point in the construction — this is full carbon fibre throughout.

All layers are bonded with aerospace structural epoxy. Internal reinforcements and mounting points use steel structural inserts. The exterior is finished with a 4-coat UV protection system for long-term durability, scratch resistance, and chemical resistance.

The complete Kraken hardtop weighs 9.5 kg — approximately 40% less than the OEM steel hardtop shell alone. Combined with a polycarbonate window, the total weight saving over the OEM hardtop with glass is significant centre-of-gravity reduction at the highest point on the car.

What distinguishes this hardtop from competitors

Most aftermarket hardtops advertised as “carbon fibre” use carbon as a cosmetic skin over a fibreglass substrate. The Kraken hardtop is structural carbon fibre throughout — six layers, double-skinned, no fibreglass at any point. The result is a hardtop that seals like OEM, weighs less than a stripped race shell, and will not flex, creak, or delaminate.

Fitment

Fits all Mazda MX-5 NA (1989–1997) and NB (1998–2005) models. Uses the same mounting points as the OEM hardtop. No gaps, no shims — seals like the factory unit.

Shipping and delivery

• Europe and UK — Shipped by truck. Cyprus and Malta are not currently serviceable. Units ship as they become available.
• North America — Price includes shipping to a warehouse in the New York area, plus all tariffs and customs fees. Onward delivery to your address is quoted separately when the unit is ready. Allow approximately 2 weeks for shipping plus 2 weeks for customs clearance and redistribution.

Seals and retainers

Seals and retainers are not included and are not currently available from Kraken. An aftermarket seal set is in development — contact us for availability.
