Kraken started in 2017, when one enthusiast designed an exhaust manifold for his own Mazda Miata because the part he wanted did not exist. It is now one of the best-known names in Mazda Miata turbocharging, making complete turbo systems for the NA, NB and NC.
From one car
Kraken started with one enthusiast and one problem: his own Mazda Miata needed an exhaust manifold that did not exist. He designed one himself, for his own car.
Other Mazda Miata owners wanted the same part, so he set up to manufacture it properly. Kraken was born, and the one-off manifold became a product anyone could buy.
One manifold grew into a full range of turbo parts. Kraken built its own foundry and workshop and brought casting in-house, so every stage of the work now happens in the same place.
Kraken is one of the best-known Mazda Miata turbo manufacturers worldwide, covering the NA, NB and NC generations. Some competitors' manifolds are cast in the same foundry. Every part is still cast, welded and assembled in-house.
Cast, welded and laid up
Every manifold starts as a pour of NiResist D5S Type 2, a high-nickel iron chosen because it holds its shape under the heat and thermal cycling that crack cheaper welded steel or plain cast iron. Downpipes and exhausts follow in 304L stainless, TIG welded and matched to the manifold they run from.
The same workshop lays up the carbon hardtop, built as a six-layer double skin in which the carbon carries the structural load. Every part is machined and checked against the factory mounting points before it leaves, so it fits without shims or grinding.
NiResist D5S Type 2 costs more to cast and takes longer to get right than the welded steel tube or plain cast iron most competitors use. Kraken uses it because it does not crack under sustained heat and thermal cycling. No manifold Kraken has cast has ever failed.
